Waveguiding properties of a photonic crystal fiber with a solid core surrounded by four large air holes

The polarization-dependent guiding properties of a hexagonal-lattice photonic crystal fiber with a solid-core surrounded by four large air holes are investigated. The appearance of a polarization dependent cutoff frequency, together with several parameters as the birefringence, the modal effective area, the group velocity dispersion and the polarization dependent loss are analyzed. A collection of fibers with different structural parameters were fabricated and characterized. A Refractive Index Sensor Based on the Resonant Coupling to Cladding Modes in a Fiber Loop

We report an easy-to-build, compact, and low-cost optical fiber refractive index sensor. It consists of a single fiber loop whose transmission spectra exhibit a series of notches produced by the resonant coupling between the fundamental mode and the cladding modes in a uniformly bent fiber. The wavelength of the notches, distributed in a wavelength span from 1,400 to 1,700 nm, can be tuned by adjusting the diameter of the fiber loop and are sensitive to refractive index changes of the external medium. Sensitivity optimization with cladding-etched long period fiber gratings at the dispersion turning point

This work presents a refractive index sensor based on a long period fiber grating (LPFG) made in a reduced cladding fiber whose low order cladding modes have the turning point at large wavelengths. The combination of these parameters results in an improved sensitivity of 8734 nm/refractive index unit (RIU) for the LP0,3 mode in the 1400-1650 wavelength range. This value is similar to that obtained with thin-film coated LPFGs, which permits to avoid the coating deposition step. The numerical simulations are in agreement with the experimental results. Accurate mode characterization of two-mode optical fibers by in-fiber acousto-optics.

Acousto-optic interaction in optical fibers is exploited for the accurate and broadband characterization of two-mode optical fibers. Coupling between LP01 and LP1m modes is produced in a broadband wavelength range. Difference in effective indices, group indices, and chromatic dispersions between the guided modes, are obtained from experimental measurements. Additionally, we show that the technique is suitable to investigate the fine modes structure of LP modes, and some other intriguing features related with modes' cut-off.
Polarization-domain-wall complexes in fiber lasers

To study the possible build-up of polarization-domain-walls (PDWs) in fiber laser cavities, an erbium-doped fiber ring laser was used and a wide range of vector polarization dynamics that can be selected at a given pump power, by using the degrees of freedom of two intracavity polarization controllers (PC) was investigated. A simple theoretical model that explains polarization switching in fiber ring lasers featuring a normally dispersive cavity with a typical, moderate, level of birefringence is presented. Generation of Bound States of Three Ultrashort Pulses With a Passively Mode-Locked High-Power Yb-Doped Double-Clad Fiber Laser

We report the generation of high-power ultrashort bound states of three pulses in an ytterbium-doped double-clad fiber laser. The laser is mode-locked through nonlinear polarization rotation technique in a unidirectional cavity configuration. A pair of diffraction grating is incorporated in the cavity to compensate for the normal dispersion of the fiber. The laser generates chirped bound states of three pulses with either equal or different time separations, with more than 500-pJ energy per pulse. These pulses are subsequently compressed to 100 fs with a compression factor of more than 40.
Etched LPFGs in reflective configuration for sensitivity and attenuation band depth increase

A reflection configuration setup for long-period fiber gratings is presented. It permits to obtain a unique band with attenuation double than that obtained in transmission configuration, which is interesting for applications where this value is reduced (e.g., the mode transition phenomenon). The method is based on the deposition of a silver mirror at the end of the optical fiber, which permits to absorb the power transmitted through cladding modes and to avoid the generation of interferometric bands. Experimental analysis of distributed pump absorption and refractive index changes in Yb-doped fibers using acousto-optic interaction.

In-fiber acousto-optic interaction is used to characterize the refractive index changes at the C band in a single-mode ytterbium-doped optical fiber under 980 nm pumping. The transmission notch created by the acoustic-induced coupling between the core mode and a cladding mode shifts to longer wavelengths when the pump is delivered to the fiber. The electronic contribution to the refractive index change is quantified from the wavelength shift. Using a time-resolved acousto-optic method, we investigate the distribution of pump absorption, and the resulting refractive index change profile, along sections of ytterbium-doped fiber exceeding 1 m long under different pump power levels.
Theory of parabolic pulse propagation in nonlinear dispersion decreasing optical fiber amplifiers

We obtain an analytical dispersion profile that permits one to reduce pulse propagation in a varying dispersion fiber to the case of an equivalent fiber with constant parameters.
